From New Mexico to Alaska, millions of acres of America’s iconic mountain vistas are changing. Scientists say nothing can be done to stop it. There have been large outbreaks before, but the scale and intensity of the ongoing native Mountain Pine Beetle epidemic is unlike any outbreak we have ever known. Drought weakened trees, global warming, and unnaturally dense forests may be factors in the beetles’ proliferation.

As an artist, I’m interested to see how Americans will react to aesthetic changes to the iconic scenery that, in some ways, has come to define us.

This project is a challenge to our contemporary concept of natural beauty.
